EXPLANATORY REMARKS,

The expenses of the Small Pox Hospital at Stone Cutters' Island were $5,358.00. The Estimate for Provisions and Medicines at the Civil Hospital was exceeded by $1,294.89, and the remaining portion of the increase was owing to certain incidental expenses connected with the lock Hospital.

The Appointments of 3rd and 4th Chinese Interpreters were not filled up, and the Hindustani Interpreter did not draw full pay.

This decrease arose under the head of Salaries.

The cost for Provisions was under the Estimate.

The amount for an Engineer, and for other Salaries, was not expended. The repairs, also, were less costly than estimated.

Among the items which make up this increase were, the new roof to Government House $12,600; Police Station at Causeway Bay, $8,400; Office for Crown Solicitor, $750.

Of this increase, $10,000 were spent in repairs to the Praya, and $14,500 in repairs rendered necessary after the Typhoon. The Roads out of Victoria were repaired at a considerable sum over the original vote.

This increase was occasioned by the grants of the Council to Widows of certain Public Officers, and in aid of certain Ecclesiastical Buildings To the Trustees for the Mahomedan Cemetery, $2,000 were paid under Ordinance No. 8 of 1867.

Lots Nos. 55 and 56 at Shay-ki Wan were purchased at $1,100 for the new Police Station. Legal expenses connected with the purchase of Duddell's Lots, paid through the Crown Agents, amounted to $254.47.

This amount was saved in the Exchange.

Net cost, $65,234.04=£11,507.1.10.
